Abstract:

Representation in architecture is the set of methods used by the designer to express his/her thought processes. These methods, which have developed and differentiated with the inclusion of the computer in daily use, have developed various interrogations and new forms of representation. The focus of the study is the relationship between the discrete paradigm, which is a newly discussed concept, and architectural representation. It aims to develop a new discourse by experimenting on the basic building blocks and rules of architecture using the discrete paradigm computational design methods. In this context, the study is shaped around two questions: What is the discrete paradigm in architecture? how the design process is realized? In the study, it is aimed to discuss the views on the discrete paradigm and to examine the relationship between design and representation. The study consists of three parts. In the first chapter, the concept of representation is defined and how the processes of representation in the computer environment have been transformed since the 1960s until today. In the second part, the discrete paradigm is defined and the opinions on the subject and the projects produced are included. At the same time, forming the basis of the discrete paradigm; The concepts of discrete, continuity and mereology are discussed. In the third part, form trials were conducted in Rhino Grasshopper in order to examine the representation of the paradigm in the computer environment. The study is important in terms of examining the potentials and representation methods of the relationship from the part to the whole, which is not considered much in the design process.
