Abstract This article proposes a reflection on Jesus Martín-Barbero's contributions to research on contemporary media and migration taking as starting point this author's own trajectory, that of the research group Network Communication, identities and citizenship (Universidade Federal de Santa Maria) and other studies in the area. It highlights the importance of observing the social uses of media as well as the mediations of identities and technicities as central to research seeking to understand the transformation of the place of communication and culture in the context of convergence and diversity.
