Turkey began to look for new allies in the Middle East following World War II. While Arab states and Iran were the sole regional allies for Turkey until 1948, the establishment of Israel brought a potential ally for Turkey. In the early years of the Cold War, Turkey and Israel were two Middle Eastern states, governed by democratic regimes, and having close relations with Western countries. The relations between the two countries grew rapidly after Turkey became the first Muslim country to recognize Israel’s independence, and these relations continued throughout the Cold War. This study aims to put forth the reasons for the instability of the relations between the two states in spite of its continuity, through an analysis of their political relations in the Cold War period.
