Kuram, metnin anlam dünyasına girebilmek için okuyucuya bir rehber olarak düşünsel arka plan sağlar ve yol gösterici bir ayna görevi üstlenir. Eleştiri ise kuramın sağladığı bu düşünsel birikimle sanat metninin işlevselliğini ontolojik bir bakış açısıyla değerlendirebilmeyi sağlar. Esasen eleştirinin işlevi metnin yapısal özelliğini, sezginin ve kültürel birikimin sağladığı soyutlanmış bir dışavurumla akademinin özgürlük alanı içinde edebî bir kanonun öngörüsel perspektifini oluşturmaktır. Aristo Poetika’sında, sanat eserinin bir taklit olduğunu, bu taklit edilen nesnelerin de eylem halinde olan erdemli ya da bayağı insanlar olduklarını dile getirirken (Aristoteles 2019: 5) aslında, ezelî ve ebedî zıtlığın simgesi olan iyi ve kötü üzerine kurulu hayatın psikolojisini anlamaya çalışmakla zaten yolu açmıştı. Yani Aristo, kendi mimesisinin temellerini oluştururken insan faktöründen yola çıkmıştı. Auerbach ise ilk anlatılardan ve kutsal metinlerden başlayarak modern dönemlere kadar yazılan edebiyat metinlerinin yapı taşları arasında sanat ve gerçeklik ilişkisini hem metnin yoğun şiirselliği içinde aramaya çalışır hem de metnin bütününü kuş bakışı bir perspektifle izleyerek geniş zamanlı bir okuma yapar. Onun eserini benzerlerinden ayıran ve orijinal bir eleştiri metni haline getiren özelliklerden biri bu üsluptur.
The theory provides the reader with a thought background as a guide to entering the meaning world of the text and takes the role of a guiding mirror.
