Leptin, a hormone secreted by fat tissue, but also by several other tissues, and it plays an important role in protecting the host from inflammation and infection. Periodontal diseases are multi-factorial infectious disorders that lead to destruction of the supporting tissues of the teeth. These diseases are the result of bacterial infections of the gingival tissues. Therapy to decrease the levels of oral microorganisms can reduce gingivitis and stabilize periodontitis. Previous studies have suggested a relationship between periodontal disease and leptin levels. Some researchers that there is a strong negative correlation between the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) leptin level and periodontal disease progression, after the presence of leptin within healthy and inflamed gingiva has been demonstrated. The aim of this paper is to summarize the effect of leptin in the human body and to report the relationship between periodontal disease and leptin levels. Leptin is a hormone that is a vital protective role against inflammation and infection of the cavity, which is also released from a variety of tissues in addition to the fat tissue. Periodontal diseases are infectious diseases caused by several factors that lead to the destruction of the support tissues of the teeth. These diseases occur as a result of bacterial infections in gingival tissues. Treatment by reducing the levels of oral microorganisms, as it can prevent gingivitis, it can also stabilize periodontitis. Earlier studies have also shown that there is a relationship between leptin levels and periodontal diseases. Some researchers have that there was a strong negative correlation between the liquid leptin level and the severity of periodontal disease after the presence of leptin in healthy and sick gingivates was shown. The purpose of this collection is to report the relationship between leptin levels and periodontal disease and to summarize the effects of leptin on the human body.
