Günümüzde vatandaşlar, yerel yönetimlerin çalışmalarına bireysel katılım sağlayarak, yerel politikaların birlikte yaratılmasına ya da en azından alınan kararları etkileyerek yerel demokrasinin gelişmesine yardımcı olmaktadır. Yerel basın, kent siyaseti ve yaşamı ile ilgili yaptığı haberler aracılığıyla kamuoyunun bu konuları öğrenmesine ve tartışmasına imkân sağlamaktadır. Öte yandan yerel basın - demokrasi ilişkisini görgül olarak sınamak için çok fazla veri bulunmamaktadır. Yerel basın üzerine yapılan çalışmalar, daha çok tahminler ve temenniler üzerinden ilerlemektedir. Bu nedenle çalışma, yerel demokrasi tartışmaları içerisinde önemli yeri olduğu düşünülen yerel basının, demokrasinin gelişmesine ve sürdürülmesine ne ölçüde katkı sağladığını saptamayı hedeflemektedir. Bu kapsamda, Mersin İmece ve Bugün Mersin gazetelerinin manşetten verdiği 638 haber üzerine bir içerik analizi uygulanmıştır. Yine, Mersin gazeteleri üzerine resmi kurumlardan elde edilen nicel veriler incelenmiştir.
Today, citizens help local democracy to develop local policies by providing individual participation in the activities of local governments, creating local policies together or at least affecting the decisions taken. Local press allows the public to learn and discuss these issues through the news about city politics and life. However, there is not much data to empirically test the relationship between local press and democracy. Studies on local media are mostly based on predictions and wishes. Therefore, the study aims to determine to what extent the local press, which is considered to have an important place in the discussions of local democracy, contributes to the development and maintenance of democracy. In this context, the content analysis was applied on 638 news items that Mersin Imece and Today Mersin newspapers made headlines. Also, quantitative data obtained from official institutions on Mersin newspapers were examined.
