Introduction: there are numerous natural herbs that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substances, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, such substances act on the immune system, intestinal microbiota, and various metabolic processes, controlling inflammatory conditions. Turmeric (Turmeric longa), from the zinberacea family also known as turmeric has several active ingredients, the main one being curcumime being a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Objective: this review demonstrates the active principles of turmeric long, chemical composition, performance in different pathologies, forms of administration and bioavailability. Materials and methods: we searched the PubMed, Scielo and Capes Journal Portal databases using the following descriptors: Turmeric Long, antioxidants, functional food. The selection criteria were original papers, human studies, with at least 15 people per study, papers written from 2010. Results and discussions: A total of 13,720 papers on turmeric long were found and 15 articles were selected for analysis. Final. The results show that turmeric has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, acting in different pathologies with satisfactory results. Conclusion: It is possible to affirm that the long turmeric has several benefits against different pathologies, because it has phenolic compounds such as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, it acts in the prevention and treatment of various metabolism alterations.
