Paralimpik Oyunlar, engelli sporcuların farklı branşlarda mücadele ettiği uluslararası organizasyonlar olarak tanımlanabilir. Engelli rehabilitasyonu amacıyla kullanılmaya başlanan spor, Stoke Mandeville Oyunlarıyla yarışma şeklini almıştır. Zaman içinde büyük kitlelere ulaşmayı başaran oyunlar günümüz Paralimpik Oyunların temelini oluşturmuştur. Paralimpik Oyunları, dört yılda bir yaz ve kış oyunları olarak, Olimpiyat Oyunlarının ardından aynı ülkede düzenlenmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı 1960 yılında düzenlenmeye başlanan oyunların, yıllar içindeki gelişimi ve değişimini incelemektir. Araştırma, Paralimpik Oyunlarının tarihsel sürecini incelemek amacıyla literatür taraması yöntemi kullanılarak yapılan bir derleme çalışmasıdır. Oyunların yıllar içindeki gelişimini görmek amacıyla, konu hakkındaki akademik çalışmalar ve resmi internet sitelerinden yararlanılmıştır. Yapılan literatür taraması doğrultusunda, düzenlenen ilk yarışmadan itibaren oyunlarda yer alan spor branşları, oyunlara katılan ülke ve sporcu sayıları, oyunların düzenlediği mekanlar yıldan yıla gelişim göstermiştir. Bunun sonucunda on altı sporcu ile tek branşta düzenlenen yarışmalar, yıldan yıla gelişerek günümüzde birçok ülke ve sporcunun farklı branşlarda mücadele ettiği Uluslararası müsabakalar şeklini almayı başarmıştır.
Paralympic Games can be defined as international organizations where disabled athletes compete in different branches. The sport, which started to be used for the rehabilitation of the disabled, took the form of competition with the Stoke Mandeville Games. The games, which managed to reach large audiences over time, formed the basis of today's Paralympic Games. The Paralympic Games are held every four years as summer and winter games in the same country after the Olympic Games. The aim of this study was to examine the development and change of the games that started to be organized in 1960. The research is a compilation study using the literature review method in order to examine the historical process of the Paralympic Games. In order to see the development of the games over the years, academic studies on the subject and official websites were used. In line with the literature review, the sports branches involved in the games, the number of countries and athletes participating in the games, and the venues organized by the games have developed from year to year since the first competition held. As a result of this, the competitions held in a single branch with sixteen athletes have developed from year to year and have managed to take the form of international competitions where many countries and athletes compete in different branches.
