Abstract:

Many reasons cited for inconclusive or inadequate results about Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB), the lack of adequate tissue sampling remains principle cause. Our hypothesis is if we eliminate the failures that may emerge during biopsy as one of the factors that negatively affects FNAB, we can evaluate accuracy of FNAB. Preoperative FNAB findings were compared to both intraoperative FNAB findings and postoperative histopathologic results in 142 patients. We took aspiration biopsy from mass under direct vision intraoperatively and eliminated the location of the needle within the abnormal area. Concurrence rate was a 100 % between intraoperative FNAB results and postoperative histopathologic diagnosis. The overall preoperative FNAB sensitivity, specifity and accuracy were, 93.8%, 90.9% and 92.2%, respectively. Positive predictive value was 89.7% and negative predictive value was 94.5%. We think that we couldn’t reach to the mass during aspiration preoperatively in some cases, so we’ve faced misdiagnosis.
