Abstract:

Following the end of the Cold War, liberal understandings have gained prominence in the international system, leading to the emergence of green theory as a crucial aspect of the discipline of International Relations, particularly in addressing environmental issues. The eco-centric approach of the green theory expects each country to contribute towards achieving a sustainable world. Germany serves as a case study in this regard, as it takes steps to transition towards renewable energy sources and establish a green economy. However, the Ukraine crisis represents a significant challenge for Germany, creating an energy security dilemma that has tested the effectiveness of the green theory. This crisis has prompted Germany to accelerate its energy transition, despite the short-term return to realist policies. This study, in which the qualitative analysis method is used, examines the impact of the Ukraine crisis on Germany, with a focus on the test of the green theory against the realist theory, which prioritizes military and security policies. The study highlights the crisis as an opportunity for green transition in the medium and long term, despite the short-term need to prioritize realist policies for Germany.
