Abstract This article aims to reflect on what has been learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. The method used was the theoretical-reflective one based on literature and on field experience from Brazil and other countries. The considerations are based on three thematic areas: Experiencing COVID-19; The impact for the elderly; and Gerontological Nursing. The experience of the pademic shows the lived experiences of a nurse specialist in gerontogeriatric nursing and shows the assistance in the pandemic, their process of becoming contaminated, as well as the assistance return in a necessary reinvention. The impact on the elderly is the issues of isolation and distancing, the vulnerable elderly, solidarity, the importance of the private initiative, the look at long-term institutions and the experiences of elderly people in the pandemic. In Gerontological Nursing, knowledge and updating are necessary and the reaffirmation of the specialty in Nursing, as well as, that care is a significantly personal act and includes assuming the importance of the existence of the other.
