Abstract:

Hemovijilance is a monitoring procedure that covers all transfusion stages from the acquisition of blood and blood components to the follow-up of final recipients, enabling the collection and evaluation of information about the unexpected and unwanted effects resulting from the use of blood products, aimed at preventing their formation and repetition. Since 2016, the national hemovigilance system has been launched in our country. Methods: Data were collected with the filling of the survey form created for the purpose of determining the level of information about the transfusion of blood and blood products of child emergency and child intensive care nurses via the internet-accessible link. Results: In total, 45 people responded to the survey sent via the Internet. 88.9 percent of the study participants have completed their bachelor’s and master’s degree. 31 of the responding nurses (68.9) that there were hemovigilancy nurses in their hospitals, and 39 (86.7) that they received service training on the use of blood and blood products. The most wrongly answered questions of the nurses involved in the study were those related to the storage period of blood products. If the blood product from the blood center is not transmitted, how long can it be stored in the refrigerator? 40 percent of the question, "How long does fresh frozen plasma be stored after it is erased?" The question is 33.3% and "What are the storage conditions of the thrombocyte suspension?" The question was answered correctly by 20%. All nurses gave the right answer, "If there is a reaction during the transfusion, I will stop the transfusion." The result: the hemovigilance system has appeared as a tool to improve the quality and safety of transfusions. This study provides data about the lack of information of nurses who take care of critical patients. We consider that healthcare staff at national level or service training will contribute to hemovigilance practices by increasing their level of knowledge about transfusion.
