Abstract:

Hallidain processes are one of the efficient tools that are utilized to interpret literary texts. Halliday divides processes into six types: material, mental, relational, behavioural, verbal, and existential. The present study investigates the use of these processes in the text of short stories to make readers experience how story teller constructs events. To achieve the aim of the study, a model of analysis in accordance to Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) is used to analyze two selected short stories written by Adgar Allan Poe, having different themes love and horror and belong to the same era. The analysis of data under investigation reveals that these six processes are crucial aids used in constructing events, in particular, the material one. It also reveals that the style cannot control the use of such processes.
