Biological sex is the biological differences that individuals are born with. Gender is the roles, responsibilities and behavior patterns attributed to men and women in society because of their gender. Gender-based gender roles aim to create a control mechanism over the individual and society by putting men and women into a behavioral pattern. These roles restrict individuals, predominantly cause discrimination against women and girls and impose coercive responsibilities. Individuals who do not meet these expectations face violence. Gender-based violence is directed from men to women in the family, and then from men and women to girls and boys, due to the roles that the traditional male-dominated society imposes on women and men. Violence and ill-treatment against children is very common in society. Child maltreatment is the whole of neglect and abuse. Gender-based violence underlies child abuse. The abuse of girls and boys is transmitted from generation to generation by teaching stereotypes that include discrimination based on gender. Child abuse emerges as “physical, emotional/psychological, economic and sexual abuse”.
