Many sociologists express their ideas about the position and functions of religion in modern societies. Some argue that religion will be withdrawn from social life by emphasizing secularization, while some are opposed to these views. In this article, we will try to briefly describe the classical secularization discussions in the way religion will go back or disappear along with modernity to better understand the topic we discuss. Then we will examine the criticism of these theories under the name of Thomas Luckmann's "invisible religion" conceptualization. Thus we will examine from the perspective of the "invisible religion" whether the views of the classical secularization theorists in the form of "religion will eventually disappear" are, as they claim, a generally transmitted scientific discovery. We will also try to highlight the importance of Luckmann in secularization discussions.
Many sociologists express their opinions about the position and functions of religion in modern societies. While some claim that religion will be withdrawn from social life by emphasizing secularization, others are against these views. In this article, we will try to briefly describe the classical secularization debates that religion will decline and disappear with modernity in order to make the subject we discussed more understandable. Then, we will examine Thomas Luckmann's criticisms of these theories under the conceptualization of "invisible religion". Thus, we will scrutinize from the perspective of "invisible religion" whether the views of classical secularization theorists that "religion will eventually disappear" are a generally accepted scientific finding, as they claim. In addition to all these, we will try to draw attention to the importance of Luckmann in secularization debates.
