Abstract:

Writing skills are one of the productive skills in a language and are very important, but it is very difficult to develop this skills even in the mother tongue. In other words, just using the rules of linguistics correctly and knowing the word does not provide an excellent writing skill. Between phrases, the use of speech determiners to associate phrases with each other makes the text compatible and consistent. Therefore, in this study, it is intended to study the use of speech determiners in paragraphs with high-pointed students and low-pointed students. In the final exam paper, students were asked to write paragraphs about one of the three pictures they chose. Because they are a B1 level foreign language (English) student, they are expected to write a paragraph of a hundred or twenty words. After the two faculty members evaluate each of the students' writing exams according to non-academic criteria (a variety of subcriteria related to these criteria: word accuracy, word diversity, linguistic accuracy, language knowledge diversity, paragraph structure, the nature and conformity of ideas, links, pointing, large letter use and writing errors), the writings of the students who sent the approval form for this study were examined both quantitative and qualitative. The paper of ten students for each category was studied with low scores and high scores. The results showed that students with high scores use more speech determiners than students with low scores. In addition, it has been determined that speech determiners have made the text misuse and overuse disruptive and incomprehensible. Finally, there was a positive relationship between advanced uses and the scores obtained from the writing exam. As a result of the study, it was revealed that students should be taught the meaningful and functional use of speech determiners. That is why teachers should try to provide the teaching of speech determiners in different methods and ways for the development of their writing skills in a foreign language.
