Bu çalışma; Erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi olarak nitelendirilen tarihsel süreçte Türk ulusal kimliğinin inşası üzerine olup, çalışma topraksal sınırları çizilmekte olan yeni devletin siyasal toplumunun sınırları; bu yeni siyasal topluma kimlerin yasal ve meşru üye olarak kabul edileceği, kimlerin dışarıda bırakılacağı soruları üzerinden şekillenmektedir. Türkçe literatürde Kemalist ulus inşa sürecinin İslam’a karşıtlığı sıklıkla dile getirilse de bu genel kanının aksine çalışmada ulusal vatandaşlığın inşasında hâkim unsurun din olduğu ileri sürülecek ve bu iddia Karamanlı Ortodoks Türkler örneği üzerinden tartışılacaktır.
