The aim of the study is to explore the effects and consequences of the concept of realism in visual arts, from the thought and past foundations, on the art flows of the twentieth century, and to discuss the self-sufficient aspirations of the century in this perspective. The intense desire for radical changes that began to appear in the early 20th century and was widely seen in all the art fields gave birth to new forms of view and approach. In almost each of these approaches, the tendency to create alternative answers to the traditional by making a different face of the real concept a starting point can be seen as a common feature. The basic references in the visual arts based on philosophy are traditionally based on the ideal of realism, the purpose of making a copy of the appearance as similar as possible. This ideal is directly related to the concept that Platon called mimesis. This concept, which existed during the Renaissance and subsequently as the most important measure of the field of visual arts, was radically questioned, especially by the art flows that emerged in the first quarter of the twentieth century. At the beginning, the processes of this intense questioning, which was thrown out of the art field of everything that is traditional and also called modernism, developed alternative vision, perception and application suggestions by radically changing the most fundamental concepts of visuality of Western art. The process, which first began as alternative development and questioning to the traditional perspective, was not done in the middle of the century and became the purpose of searching for the new one. This process, called the avant-garde art, resulted in the acceptance of all forms of view and interpretation in the field of art. The process of reaction to the traditional, brought by modernism, resulted in the postmodernism and then, the process of modernism resulted in the re-existence of everything left outside the field of art together with other formations in the field of art.
