Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to analyze the artistic interaction between Eastern and Western cultures through carpet-rug installation artworks in the postmodern art environment. The study focuses on Heike Weber’s, Rudolf Stingel’s and Martin Roth’s installation artworks which they fictionalized on carpets-rugs within the environment of postmodern art. The data in the study were collected through the semiotic analysis and literature review through the carpet-rug installation artworks of the Western artists subject to the study. Semiotic analysis were carried out at a descriptive, narrative and deep-structure level. As a result of the study, it was found that Eastern carpet-rugs have been a source of inspiration for Western artists from past to present; they were used conceptually and technically by Western artists in postmodern installation applications; the use of Eastern carpets-rugs in the installations helped to build a new, original and contemporary discourse on cultural indicators for the Western artists; in addition, they reappear as artistic forms through artistic reproduction and ready-made objects.
