METHODS: This analytic-cross sectional study was made with the mother of 159 babies (0-12 months) who were registered in family medicine departments of a community health centre in Aegean Region. The data were collected with the questionnaire prepared by the researchers between March 2016 and December 2017. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics and chi-square test. RESULTS: The mean age of the mothers in the study was 28.31 ± 5.16 years and most of them were primary school (29.9%). It was determined that infants had a mean of 4.87 ± 3.04 months, 26.4% of them were still breastfed and 39.6% of them were mixed and 95.0% of them did not have any feeding problems. In the study, it was determined that the mean daytime sleep time of the babies was 3.31 ± 1.81 and the mean night time sleep time was 9.08 ± 1.80. Most of the mothers reported that their babies sleep at 3-4 (42.3%) and 8-10 (56.0%) hours during the day. Of the mothers, 49.7% reported that their babies were regularly sleeping in the night and daytime, had sleeping problem such as difficulty sleeping (27.0%) and little sleep (5.7%). Of the mothers, 60.3% reported that had their babies defecated regularly every day, more (21.8%), two (50.5%) and three (20.8%) times, and 8.2% of them have a defecation problem. In the chi-square analysis, it was determined that the sleep and defecation characteristics and problems of the infants did not change in terms of baby’s ages, feeding form and feeding problems. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This study concluded that most of the babies had regular sleeping and defecating characteristics and these characteristics did not change according to their nutritional status and ages. During the follow-up and care of babies, it can be ensured that sleeping and defecation activities are identified, problems are identified early, and baby-specific approaches can be established in solving possible and existing problems.
