Abstract:

In this article, the terms of war in Suhayl u Nevbahar were studied in terms of origins and structural, semantic features. Suhayl u Nevbahar was a masnavi composed of 5703 couplets, and it was translated in 1350 into Turkish from Persian by Hoca Mes?ud. Masnavi is a long poetic story of love between Suhayl, the son Yemen sultan’s son, and Nevbahar, the Chinese emperor’s daughter. Suhayl u Nevbahâr has a rich vocabular. Words that are examined in this study are: ceng, çalış, savaş, urış, bend, demür, ?ışt, gürz, ?al?an, ?amçı, ?argu, kemend, ?ılıç, o? / o?, ya / yay, süñü, kus, na?are, ?ur-na, cevşen, çu?al, ışı?, ?on. 23 terms of war were used 228 times in the manuscripts text. The most commonly used names are: ?ılıç (49), o? / o? (48), ya / yay (27). 14 words (?avaş, çalış, urış, demür, ?al?an, ?amçı, ?argu, ?ılıç, o? / o?, ya / yay, süñü, çu?al, ışı?, ?on) are in Turkish and 9 words (ceng, bend, ?ışt, gürz, kemend, kus, na?are, ?ur-na, cevşen) are in Persian. Some of these words are used today in Turkey Turkish, some almost never used. Today, ?ışt, kus, na?are, çu?al words aren’t used in Turkish. Çalış, urış, temür, cevşen, ışı?, ?on words are used today in different forms and meanings. Ceng, ?avaş, bend, gürz, ?al?an, ?amçı, ?argu, kemend, ?ılıç, o? / o?, ya / yay, süñü, ?ur-na words have survived with small volume changes or no changes.
