It has also transformed the forms of digital communication in all areas of life. Internet-based communication platforms, when evaluated from a new media point of view, have brought individuals from a passive listener/spectator position to a position where they can easily share their thoughts. But the comments made by individuals about the news published on the internet is not always possible to call freedom of expression. As Covid-19 has been declared a pandemic, the news on social networks has been a hate speech in the world. The first Covid-19 case in Northern Cyprus was identified in a German citizen tourist and during the quarantine period this incident has been on the agenda in the media. This study examined the users’ comments under the news titles and news posts posted on Facebook about German citizens in the northern Cyprus during the period covering the dates of 10 March – 1 April 2020. In the framework of the study, the news shared in the news sites of Cyprus, Yenidüzen, Gündem Cyprus and Cyprus Post was thematically tabled with content analysis. Some of the remarkable comments subsequently were studied according to Barthes's speech analysis. In this study, the debate of hate speech in the expression freedom axis and in the context of German tourists created nationalist hate speech were attempted to identify.

Communication forms also have been transformed with digitalization in all aspects of life. When internet-based communication platforms are evaluated in terms of new media, they have brought individuals from a passive listener/ audience position to an active position, that is, they can easily share their opinions and react to events. However, it is not always possible to say that comments made by individuals about the news published on the internet as freedom of expression. With the announcement of Covid-19 as a pandemic around the world, hate speech is encountered in the news published on social networks against to German tourists in Northern Cyprus. The first Covid-19 case in Northern Cyprus was detected in a German citizen tourist, and this event was on the agenda of the media during the lockdown period. This study examined the user comments that are made under the news headlines and news posts about German citizens in northern Cyprus during the period between Mart 10 and April 1, 2020. The news shared by the Kıbrıs, Yenidüzen, Gündem Kıbrıs and Kıbrıs Postası news sites were tabulated descriptively with content analysis. Some remarkable comments made afterwards were analyzed according to Barthes' discourse analysis. This study focuses on discussing hate speech on the axis of freedom of expression and analyzing the nationalist hate speech created against German tourists in its context.
