Abstract:

The map reading skill is an important skill that needs to be gained in childhood and which makes life much easier depending on its effective use. One of the important lessons in giving this skill to children is social knowledge. The aim of the study is also to reveal the qualifications of high school students of 8th grade who took the social information course for four years in the field of map literature skills. The sample of the study consists of a total of 90 8th grade students studying in four different secondary schools located in the center of the province of Van during the 2018-2019 educational teaching period. The data was collected through an open end survey. In the study that adopted a nicel approach, the data was solved using the SPSS 21.0 package program. For the analysis of the data, the frequency and percentage values were considered. When the findings achieved in the study are studied; students have not sufficient level of knowledge on topics such as the map concept, the criteria to be found on the map, the map types, the meanings of the colors used on the map, the meanings of the symbols on the map and the concept of the earth; they often mix the length and length concepts with the "parallel and meridian" concepts; they usually mix the coordinates of Turkey and have not a complete capacity to identify the place according to the given coordinates.
