19. yüzyıl tüm dünyada büyük değişim ve dönüşümlerin yaşandığı bir yüzyıldı. Osmanlı Devleti artık Avrupa’nın üstünlüğünü her alanda kabul etmiş, Batıdaki değişimleri kendi bünyesine adapte etmeye çalışıyordu. Modernleşmenin başladığı ilk alan orduydu. Osmanlılar ordularını modernize ettikleri taktirde kaybettikleri eski savaş güçlerini tekrar kazanacak ve topraklarını koruyabileceklerdi. Bunun yanında denizcilik alanında buharlı gemi teknolojisinin ortaya çıkmasıyla birlikte donanmanın modernizasyonu ile ilgilendiler. İlk etapta yelkenli gemilerden buharlıya geçiş kolay olmadı fakat ilerleyen dönemde buharlı gemilerin insan ve lojistik taşımadaki hızları diğer gemilerin yerini almalarını kolaylaştırdı. Osmanlı Devleti’nin Tanzimat ile başlayan ve Islahat Fermanı ile devam eden modernleşme serüveni ise inişli çıkışlı bir dönem olsa da buharlı gemilerin ortaya çıktığı zamana denk gelmekteydi. Bu dönemde buharlı gemilere verilen isimlerin devletin kendi siyasi politik dilini yansıtması şaşırtıcı değildi. Devlet yaşamış olduğu siyasi ve kurumsallaşmış değişimi bu alanda gemilere verdiği isimlerle adeta halka aşılamaya çalışıyordu. Bu dönemde devlet eliyle teşvik edilen şirketleşme girişimleri de gemilere verdikleri isimlerle modernleşen devleti desteklemekteydiler. Dönemsel olarak devlet politikasında yaşanan değişimlerin de gemi isimlerine yansıdığı oluyordu. Bu makalenin amacı uzun bir değişim ve sancılı bir süreci içine alan Osmanlı modernleşmesini gemilere verilen isimler üzerinden incelemektir. Böylece devletin resmi politikasının ve siyasi dilinin yaşamış olduğu değişimi donanmadaki modernleşme üzerinden anlamaya çalışılacaktır.
The 19th century was a century of great changes and transformations throughout the world. The Ottoman State has now accepted the superiority of Europe in all areas, trying to adapt the changes in the West to its own body. The first area that modernization began was the army. If the Ottomans modernized their armies, they would be able to regain the old war forces they lost and safeguard their lands. In addition, with the emergence of steam shipping technology in the maritime field, they were interested in the modernization of the naval. In the first stage, the transition from ships to steam was not easy, but in the advanced period, the speeds of steam ships in human and logistics transport made it easier for other ships to replace them. The modernization of the Ottoman State, which began with Tanzimat and continued with the Islahat Ferman, was a decayed output period, but it was equal to the time when steam ships appeared. It was not surprising that the names given to the steam ships during this period reflect the state’s political language. The political and institutionalized change that the state experienced was trying to vaccinate the people with the names given to the ships in this area. In this period, the corporation efforts encouraged by the government were also supporting the modernized state by the names they gave to the ships. The changes in the government's policy were also reflected in the names of the ships. The purpose of this article is to explore the Ottoman modernization, which is in a long process of change and punishment, through the names given to the ships. Thus, the change that the state's official policy and political language has experienced will be tried to understand through modernization in the naval.
