Bu çalışmanın amacı, Amerika Yabancı Ülkelerdeki Misyoner Komiserleri Üst Kurulu’nun (ABCFM) önde gelen misyonerlerinden Lyman Bartlett tarafından kaleme alınan 1877-1878 Kayseri Yıllık Raporu’nda öne çıkan önemli konuları değerlendirmektir. Diğer misyoner raporlarında olduğu gibi hem Kayseri’de hem de dış-istasyonlardaki misyoner okulları, bu okullarda okuyan öğrenciler, eğitim-öğretim, misyonerlerin yerli çalışanları gibi konuların detaylı ve kantitatif bilgini içermesinin yanı sıra, misyonerler tarafından yeni inşa edilen ibadethanenin mimari detayları, Yozgat kilisesindeki sıra dışı gelişmeler, Osmanlı-Rus Savaşı’nın (1877-1878) ülkenin ekonomik durumuna yansıması gibi konulardan bahsedilmiştir. Bunların dışında, modern Türkiye’nin başkenti olacak olan Ankara’daki Protestan cemaatinin kuruluşu ve bu oluşum ortaya çıkarken buradaki İngiliz Konsolosluğu’nun desteği, raporun öne çıkan konuları arasındadır. Değerlendirme ayrıca Bartlett’ın raporunda bahsedilen bazı olayların dönemin diğer misyoner kaynakları tarafından farklı şekilde yansıtıldığını gözler önüne sermektedir.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the important topics highlighted in the 1877-1878 Kayseri Annual Report, which was listed by Lyman Bartlett, a leading missionary of the High Council of Missionary Commissaries in the U.S. Foreign Countries (ABCFM). As in other missionary reports, missionary schools in both Kayseri and outside stations, students studying in these schools, education and teaching, the missionaries contain detailed and quantitative knowledge of topics such as local workers, the architectural details of the newly built church by the missionaries, the unusual developments in the Yozgat church, the reflection of the Ottoman-Russian War (1877-1878) on the economic situation of the country. In addition, the establishment of the Protestant community in Ankara, which will be the capital of modern Turkey, and the support of the British Consulate here as this formation emerges, are among the topics of the report. The assessment also suggests that some of the events mentioned in Bartlett’s report were reflected differently by other missionary sources of the period.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the essential topics that came to fore in the 1877-1878 Kayseri Annual Report, which was written by one of the prominent missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), Lyman Bartlett. Apart from those subjects which other missionary reports had usually dwelled on (such as detailed and quantitative information about the missionary schools, the pupils who were attending these schools, education, missionaries’ native laborers both in Kayseri and its out-stations), subjects such as the architectural design of their recently built worship place, the extraordinary developments that took place in the Protestant church of Yozgat, and the country’s deteriorated economic situation caused by the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878 were also pointed out. In addition to these, the formation of the Protestant congregation in Ankara (which would become modern Turkey’s capital city), and the British Consulate’s support came to the fore among the important topics mentioned. Evaluation also demonstrates that some events which were touched upon in Bartlett’s report were reflected in a different way in other missionary sources of the period.
