Abstract:

The aim of this research is to examine the writing activities in the secondary school Turkish textbooks and to reveal the problems identified in that textbooks. So, a total of 362 writing activities in 5th grade Anıttepe (private publisher), 6th, 7th and 8th grade MEB (publisher of the ministry of national education) Turkish textbooks were evaluated. Two stages were followed in the research. In the first stage, the distribution of the activities examined according to the grade level, theme, text and writing achievements in the 2019 Turkish Curriculum were determined; in the second stage, problems in writing activities were identified. Some of the prominent results of the analyzes are as follows: There are 91 writing activities in the 5th grade, 111 in the 6th grade, 64 in the 7th grade and 96 in the 8th grade in Turkish textbooks according to grade levels. Regardless of grade level, mostly “Applies writing strategies” “Writes informative text”; at least "Shares what he wrote", "Writes the steps of a work", "Uses appropriate connections in his writings", "Uses Turkish words taken from foreign languages, not yet settled in Turkish language", "Uses proverbs, idioms and aphorisms to enrich his writings" activities are included. The problems identified in the examined textbooks are that there is no balanced distribution between writing activities, writing activities are not in an appropriate order, sub-skills of writing are not taken into account, writing activities are independent from the reading text, and the instructions in writing activities are not clear.
