Surgery tor peripheral vascular trauma differs from other vascular surgery in a lot of ways. The peripheral vascular trauma patient presents with marked physiologic derangements, is eften hypothermic, hypovolemic, hypoxemic and acidotic. Currently, the two leading causes of peripheral vascular injury are traffic accidents and urban violence. in nur clinic, 221 patients with peripheral vascular injury were seen between 1979-1994. Vascular injuries were most com monly seen in the extremities. The most common arterial injuries occured in the brachial artery (43 patients), while the mest common venous injuries occured in the common femoral vein (30 patients). Arterial injuries were treated by inser tion of saphenous vein graft (46.15 %). end-to-end anastomosis (29.41 %), lateral arteriorhaphy (14.47 %), ligation (6.33 %),_and insertion of PTFE (polyteterafluoroenthylene) graft (3.,61 %). Venous injuries were treated by insertion of saphenous vein graft (31.93 %), ligation (26.89 %), lateral venorrhaphy (21 %) and end-to-end anastomosis (20.16 %).
