Abstract:

Every society has its own naming beliefs and traditions. As an ancient nation, Russians also have strong traditions that have their roots in the pre-Christian pagan period. The tradition of naming to person is one of them. In this study, the science of onomastics and accordingly, one of its most important sub-branches, anthroponomy are examined in the context of Russian language and culture. In addition, by considering the anthroponomy in the context of theological, mythological and language-identity-culture, its effects on the society it belongs to are shown. On the other hand, naming traditions in Russians are divided into four groups, taking into account the historical process and the characteristics of the period. With this examination, it is seen that with the acceptance of Orthodox Christianity, the tendency of giving names to the Russians and Slavic traditions combined with religious belonging and this continues today. With XIX. century the tradition of naming in Russians, which gained a political tendency, has now taken on a very functional structure with the name of western origin with the effect of globalization.
