Abstract:

The empire is not only a historical concept but also an object of the comparative analysis in social sciences. Some thinkers compare the modern empires and old empires and write about their roles in world politics. The aim of the present paper is to focus on the recent topic of ‘rediscovery of the empire’ in the social theory. With this aim, our study deals in large measure with some thinkers’ approaches to the empire and the future of the nation state as a historical-political problem: Herfried Münkler, Karen Barkey, Carl Schmitt, Benedict Anderson, Halil İnalcık, Kemal Tahir, Hüsamettin Arslan. The present paper’s main aim is to analyze whether the empire vision can contribute to the recovery of our fragmented situation and spiritual disorder created by the nation-state. The major problems in our life today requires us to return to our past and empire history not with nation-state vision but empire vision. This article also partly investigates the vision of Ottoman Empire and aims to rethink borders and space in Schmit’s own words, in the context of empire and nation state.
