Abstract:

Under the service of German Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, Burchard von Strazburg travelled to Egypt in 1175 with a diplomatic mission. Burchard's task was to extend the political and commercial treaties between Friedrich Barbarossa and Sultan Selahâddîn Eyyûbî and to gather information about the region. When the German ambassador arrived in Alexandria, Sultan Selahaddin was in Damascus. Burchard went to Syria by land to meet with the Sultan. When he returned to Europe after his near-Eastern trip, Burchard took his observations in a report. The original text of Burchard's report has not reached today. But at the beginning of the 13th century, the priest Arnold von Lübeck added the Burchard's report as a part of the Chronicles in which he was writing that time. So the report of the type of travel of the German ambassador has arrived to date. Burchard discussed the relations between Muslim, Christian and Jewish peoples living in the region of Egypt and Syria, Christian temples, Muslim worship and daily lives, the topography of the region and suburban resources, the vegetables and fruits grown in the region, animals, and the difficulties of traveling in the desert. The German ambassador translated the faiths of Muslims and their relations with other nations in a very objective way on paper. In this study, the report that Burchard von Strazburg translated his observations on his trip to Egypt and Syria was tried to be examined by the method of speech analysis and the observations of Burchard were evaluated.
