Abstract:

Abstract:

Uyku Sersemi by Hakan Bıçakçı which was published in 2017 is about Istanbul, that has been changing rapidly from 2000s. The novel narrates that, with an intense consumption and a fast urban transformation, Istanbul begins to lose its urban image which has been already settled in its residents’ minds. While Istanbul fails to keep possession of its identification by losing its places one by one which distinguish it from the other cities and give it its soul, this means that its residents, who established their identities based on the city and constituted their memories with the city’s places, like Kahraman Kara who is the protagonist in the novel, also lose their identity and integrity and become fragmental. On the one side this brings nostalgia, taking refuge on the past, on the other side it hauls the resident who feels under the danger of losing her/his memory, identity and self-completeness to deep melancholy. In this context, while Uyku Sersemi consists a memory about rapidly changing İstanbul in 2000s through literature, this article is about the things indicated by this memory, discusses the nostalgia and melancholy caused by İstanbul which loses its image, through the protagonist of the novel.
