The profession of social work is a social movement that has helpfulness in its foundation since its nascence and the act of helping is uniquely suited for the practitioners of a discipline that has help in its foundation. This study is carried out on 188 voluntary social work undergraduate students with the intent of determining the helping attitudes of those students who will initiate the future helping relationships. The Helping Attitude Scale developed by Nickell (1998, ss. 4-10) and adapted to Turkish by researchers is used in the study to evaluate the attitudes, feelings and beliefs of participators related to help, the Cronbach Alpha value regarding the reliability of the scale is found as 0,83. In relation to the 3 sub-dimensions that are on the scale; the Cronbach Alpha value of the sub-dimension “Alturism” is 0,80, the Cronbach Alpha value of the sub-dimension “Self-sufficient/Receiver-Giver” is 0,69, and the Cronbach Alpha value of the sub-dimension “Selfish” is 0,61. In conclusion it is determined that the helping attitudes of the students can be identified at most as “self-sufficient”and at least as “selfish”; the helping attitudes do not vary by sex (p>0.05).According to the results of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, it is thought that the Turkish form of the scale can be used to evaluate the attitudes, feelings and beliefs of participators related to help.
