Abstract:

This study was carried out in order to determine the preferences and reasons of cattle breeds in line with the opinions of breeders. In the study, the number of questionnaires was determined as 487 people by simple random sampling method. Descriptive statistical values of each question category answered by the breeders were made using the SPSS 20.0 package program. As a result of the evaluations, In the breed preference of the breeders, 31.2% of the breeders took the first place with the Simmental breed. This breed was followed by Holstein Friesian (Black and White) breed with 27.9% and Brown Swiss breed with 14.8%. The rate of preference for other races was 26.1%. Among the effective reasons for breeders' breed preference, milk yield was the first (18.9%). The reason for this preference was followed by milk fat yield, progeny yield and sales ability (11.9%, 11.9% and 11.3%, respectively), which had equal preference rates. Carcass yield per animal was ranked 3rd (10.2%) in the list of reasons for breed preference. While 46.0% of the breeders prefer the breed they will breed reported that toe-nail strength, easy care, resistance to mammary diseases, temperament, milk protein and sympathy for the race were effective. As a result, the priority in the race preference belongs to the Simmental breed, followed by the Holstein Friesian and Brown Swiss breeds. The most important reason for racial preference was high milk yield, followed by reproduction (offspring yield), ease of marketing and high milk fat ratio. It is estimated that climate change and drought due to increasing global warming will significantly affect the breed preference in the near future. For this reason, in order to obtain breeds with high temperature tolerance and resistant to blood parasitic diseases such as Theileriosis and Anaplasmosis, it is recommended to focus on crossing the culture breeds in Turkey with the Southern Anatolian Red breed, as well as supporting the crossing studies with genome-wide analysis method.
