Özet:

The aim of the study is to determine metaphoric perceptions and musical point of views of participants about the concept of “music”. Phenomenology which is one of the qualitative research methods was used in the study and the data were analysed through content analysis technique. This study was carried out with trainees who attend violin course (western music) at Public Education Center in Trabzon in 2017-2018 academic year. A total of 30 trainees, 25 female and 5 male, participated in the research. The data was collected with a form which included “Music is like………… Because………” statement. Participants were asked to fill in the blanks in given statement. In the form gender, age and musical engagement time variables were also asked in the given form. After the application, the forms which were filled in by the participants were examined and which statements included metaphoric perceptions were decided as some were eliminated. Then metaphors were coded and thematic categories were created. With obtained findings metaphoric perceptions of participants were interpreted. It was determined that only 26 valid metaphoric sentences were created by the participant in the filled forms. Those metaphors were later analysed and grouped under 5 different categories. Those categories were titled as “music as a source of life”, “music as a tool for expressing feelings”, “music as a treatment and cure”, “music as science” and “music as individual (human)”. According to findings it was seen that participants acquire positive views about music. In this context, according to the participants who participated in the research, it has been identified that being a part of our life is not only seen as a means of expressing our feelings, but also a source of science, a source of treatment, healing, or an individual (human). The two main categories in which participants produce the most metaphors are that music is a source of life and a means of expressing feelings.
