Food consumption and prevalence of overweight/ obesity in children of a public school

Abstract:

Aim: To assess thenutritional status and dietary intake of some industrial products, precursors of obesity among children in a public school child in the city of Salvador do Sul-RS. Methods: We performed an interview with the parents about the frequency of consumption of some foods by the children. After that it was collected theweight and height of the children 2-5 years (n = 66). Results: A higher chocolate consumption (24.6% consume 1 per day) and sugar (20% consume 1 time a day). As for nutritional assessment, only 16.9% had high weight-for-age, 13.8% of children were diagnosed with obesity and overweight cm 24.6%, according to BMI / Age. And 15.3% had high weight for height. Discussion: Although most of the children are classified as eutrophic, there is great concern about eating habits, especially regarding the choices of food consumed. Note that a high consumption of sugar and chocolate daily, weekly and chocolates, showing the consumption of sweets and treats at an earlier age for children Conclusion: preschool, mostly are appropriate before anthropometric data, but as food have high consumption of sugar and chocolate and less frequent consumptionof chips, and chocolate cake. It neededto educate more parents and children to their food choicesand this mayreflectinmore health to thechildren.
