The use of body mass index is recognized as a strategy for implementation in large populations, it can provide estimates of nutritional changes, thus allowing the development of obesity prevention programs. The purpose of the study was to diagnose overweight and obesity in schoolchildren and determine the degree of agreement among criteria for classification of BMI. We evaluated 124 students from a public school Várzea Grande / MT. Each student was classified according to BMI using three different criteria. Kappa test was used. No differences were found for BMI between age groups and sex. The prevalence of overweight was higher for both sexes and age when adopted the criterion of Conde and Monteiro (2006). The difference in percentage points between 8% to 19.3%. It was observed that the correlation was weaker among the criteria for Conde and Monteiro (2006) and Cole et al (2000) for classification of overweight. Atthe age of 13i -15, for both sexes, there was perfect agreement between the criteria of Conde and Monteiro (2006) and CDC. We conclude that the criterion of Conde and Monteiro (2006) was diagnosed that the highest percentage of overweight and that the degree of agreement with the other criteria for classification of BMI should be further investigated.
