Obstetric ultrasonography is one of the prenatal diagnostic methods frequently used to evaluate the fetus and pregnancy. The part to be evaluated in the obstetric ultrasound can vary according to the trimester found. First trimester includes assessing of gestational sac, presence or absence of cardiac activity, number of fetuses, fetal measurements, and anatomical evaluation of the reproductive organs of the pregnant woman. Second and third trimester include assessing of fetal heart activity, amniotic fluid volume, placental location, umbilical cord and structure, fetal gestational age, fetal weight estimation, fetal anatomical evaluation and maternal anatomical structure of the reproductive organs. Ultrasonography was first used in the field of maritime in history. Later, it was started to be used with the purpose of diagnosing diseases in the field of medicine. The first use of ultrasonography in obstetrics was in 1955 by Ian Donald, a Scottish obstetrician. Although the use of ultrasonography in the prenatal period began in the 1950s, the use of ultrasonography to diagnose malformations dates back to the 1970s. in conclusion, obstetric ultrasound examination has become an important part of antenatal care in the evaluation of fetus and pregnancy, early diagnosis and treatment of malformations. The roles and responsibilities of the midwives, which are actively involved in antenatal care, for obstetric ultrasonography are also very important in this context. In this study, it is aimed to address past to present use of obstetric ultrasonography which having vital importance for maternal and infant health and the roles of midwives for obstetric ultrasound examinations.
