Abstract:

This study was carried out to determine the family planning methods used by 15-49 year old women in the center of Susuz district of Kars province and to determine the factors affecting method selection. The study's universe consists of married women of 1369 females aged 15-49 living in Susuz provience of Kars and who applied to the Susuz Integrated Family Health Center between November and December 2016. The sample of the study consists of 214 women aged between 15 and 49 who applied to the Susuz Integrated Family Health Center in Susuz, Kars. The data of the study were collected through a personal information form which included information on the socio-demographic and fertility characteristics of the women, as well as information on the family planning and use status. Data were evaluated using mean, standard deviation, percentile and chi-square test. It was determined that 78.8 percent of the women with a mean age of 32.13 ± 7.58 used modern and 21.2 percent of them used traditional family planning method. The most common methods used by women are RIA (28.8 %), withdrawal (25.0 %), and condom (24.4 %). There were statistically significant correlations between the factors affecting the family planning method choices of the women and knowledge level, education level, family type, working and income status (p<0.05). As a result; 72.9 % of the women use the family planning method and 78.8 % of the methods used are modern methods. In traditional methods, withdrawal is the most common method (68.7 %) and most commonly used method (25 %). As a result of the study, it may be suggested that adequate training and counselling services should be provided to increase the use of effective family planning method.
