Abstract This essay explores the dichotomy between the processes of the so-called Russian cultural identity as a form of affiliation with the Soviet ideology. It takes Tarkovski’s film and its clashes with the Socialist realism as its starting point. There lies the sources of a discussion, not least controversy, that goes beyond the very limits of the Soviet revolutionary vanguard. According to the hypothesis of our work, the conflicts surrounding the Russian vs. Soviet conflicts can be scaled in three areas: the geopolitical, cultural, and ideological. As it is set in the literary, cinematic and semiotic fields, we have found arguments and experiences that lead us to situate the main research’s question as a way for a critical investigation of an almost unknown history.
