Abstract:

Dr. Tevfik Sağlam in his 81 year life served such as; Chief of Istanbul Chamber of Physicians, Physicians Society of Friendship and Solidarity Founder, Founder of Istanbul Tuberculosis Association, Rector of the Istanbul University, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Member of Supreme Council of Health, the Ministry of Defense Armies Medic Department, Gülhane Hospital Head Physician, Physician of Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital, Cebeci Hospital, İzmir Hospital. He was a leading scientist and statesman that devoted to the solution of health problems in the community. Tevfik Sağlam enrolled to Kuleli Military medical High School in 1895 and then Military Medical Faculty of Demirkapı in 1898. He graduated with the rank of Captain Physicians in 1903. He works about one year at Gülhane İnternal Medicine department. Then he has achieved the examination of assistant professor of Internal Medicine. In the period of II. Abdulhamit, Medical Faculty Building located in Haydarpaşa, completed. Then Dr.Tevfik Sağlam appointed to the Chief of Laboratory of Internal Medicine Department of The Haydarpaşa Medical Faculty. During his employment with in the medical faculty, he thinks that it is necessary to write a book about propaedeutic. So he began to work with his colleague Dr. Süreyya Ali who was the head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the medical Faculty. They make use of some German, French and Turkish source materials. And they bring out a comprehensive book about propaedeutic. This precious work firstly published in 1909 in the name of ‘Usul-ü Teşhis-i Seriri’ in printing house of ‘Kader Matbaası’ in Istanbul. Book consists of 715 pages contains 116 figures and 2 colored plates. In our study we analyzed the third imprint of the book that published in the Ottoman Turkish Language in 1912. We believe that if the book translates to today’s Turkish Language, it has comprehensive and detailed and up to date information as today’s medical student benefit from it.
