Abstract:

Nomology is the branch of science that deals with the names of living and non-living beings or abstract concepts. One of the fields of study of the science of names is the branch of science that examines personal names (anthroponomy). The use of names is used functionally in many cultural and social fields in Turkish society. Each name used represents a person. One of the fields of study of name science is nicknames. Nicknames are generally seen in rural areas where relations between people are still important. Depending on the small population in rural areas, people call each other by their nicknames. Thus, sincerity, liveliness and impressiveness are seen in expression and behavior. Each nickname bears traces of the geography, history, culture and social life of the region. Turkish dialects, which have an important place in terms of vocabulary, and nicknames, which are a reflection of it, still continue to exist in Turkish dialects. The tradition of giving nicknames in Besni district, which is located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region and has hosted many civilizations throughout history, preserves its vitality. In this study, the nicknames given in Besni district and villages were determined by compilation method. The nicknames were transferred to writing according to the way they were said by the local people. The determined nicknames were classified according to the reasons and structures.
