Abstract:

Before the proclamation of the Republic, the results of the wars and the socio-economic developments had been effective in determining the health policies of the new state as in other areas. In this period, the insufficiency of the medical staff and epidemics were threatening the public health. During the Republican period, the health issue was dealt with as a national case, the Compulsory Service Law was enacted in order to send doctors to the countries that remained without a doctor, and epidemics began to fight effectively.In the early years of the Republic, Van was one of the centers where epidemics were effective and important developments in health were experienced. Some of the epidemics that were effective during the Single Party Period in Van were malaria, flowers, trachoma, leprosy. During this period the government, in the field of health to expand the organization to include the countryside, doctors and other health care personnel began to take measures to close the gap and fight against epidemics. In this context, health institutions in Van started to be established and the branch of Hilâl-i Ahmer, which was transferred from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, operated according to the policies of the new state. This article deals with health problems and institutions in Van during the Single Party Period. The subject discussed in this article is presented with archival documents based on the method of history science.
