This research was conducted as a descriptive study for the purpose of determining nursing students'level of knowledge about breast cancer and the status of their doing breast self examination (BSE).This study was conducted in 2005 with Pamukkale University Denizli School for Health SciencesNursing Division students (n=137) and the remaining 90 students comprised the sample group. Thedata were collected using a questionnaire about the students' demographic characteristics and aquestionnaire for measuring their level of knowledge about breast cancer and their status of doingBSE. Mean, standard deviation, number, percentage calculations and chi square test for significancewere used in the data analysis. The mean age of the students included in the study was 20.58± 2.12years. In the study 22.2 % of the students had a positive family history for cancer and 5.6 % had afamily member with breast cancer. It was determined that 2.2 % of the students had previously had abreast-related illness and 46.7 % did BSE. Only 33.3 % of the students had previously done BSE forprevention. Significant differences were determined in the status of doing BSE and the answers theygave to the questions about breast cancer signs and symptoms and the method of doing BSEaccording to students' school year
