Hakikat kavramı felsefenin ana meselelerinden biri olan epistemolojinin üzerinde durduğutemel konulardan biridir. Pragmatizm ve bu akımınönemli temsilcilerinden biri olan William James’in ortaya koymuş olduğu hakikat düşüncesi, felsefe tarihi sürecinde ortaya konan hakikat teorilerine orijinal bir katkı sağlamıştır. James’e kadar olan dönemde hakikat bulunmayı bekleyen bir maden gibi keşfedilmeyi bekliyor ve bir yerlerde mevcuttur diyenler olduğu gibi, hakikat diye bir şey yoktur ve asla ulaşılamaz diyenler de olmuştur. James’in bu sürece getirdiği yenilik ise hakikat ne bulunmayı bekleyen bir maden gibidir, ne de ulaşılmaz bir şeydir anlayışıdır. Ona göre hakikat, tecrübi hayatın içerisinde, dinamik bir süreçtir ve insanların ihtiyacına göre icat edilir.
