Abstract:

As important as it is for Syrians living in Turkey to learn Turkish and reflect the rules of this language in their daily conversations, it is equally important for them to develop their written communication skills. While verbal communication can be developed with the daily life of the individual, formal education is definitely needed to advance in written communication. Syrian students at secondary school level are expected to have good vocabulary and grammar proficiency, and to present their feelings and thoughts in written form in a certain order and integrity. Case studies are used to fulfill this expectation. In this study, it is aimed to examine and evaluate the writing skills of Syrian students studying at secondary school level in Turkey. The study, which was prepared using the document review model, one of the qualitative research approaches, was realized at Melikgazi district of Kayseri province, in the 2021-2022 academic year. The compositions obtained from 140 Syrian secondary school students were evaluated with the written expression rubric created by Büyükikiz (2011). According to the findings, it was concluded that the part where Syrian secondary school students made the most mistakes and failed in the field of writing skills was planning and functioning. It is seen that Syrian secondary school students make a lot of mistakes in writing rules and punctuation. It was concluded that the part where they made the least mistakes in the field of writing skill was legibility. These results show that Syrian secondary school students should deepen their education in planning and editing, spelling and punctuation in written expression
