Abstract:

This study aims to determine the STEM attitude levels of high school students and to identify engineering concepts, which are a discipline of STEM education. Karma research has been used. In the study, the STEM attitude scale and open-end questions form of conversation were applied as a data collection tool. The STEM attitude scale, which is the original "Students' Attitudes toward Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Education", is adapted to Turkish by Yılmaz, Yiğit Koyunkaya, Smiler and Güzey (2017). The interview form has been used to identify students’ views on engineering and engineering concepts. The study collects quantitative data of 148 high school students, while the study group collects qualifying data of 20 students. The results from the study have found that students are in a positive attitude towards STEM education. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the STEM attitude levels of students according to the gender variable. According to the quality findings of the research, it can be said that students have a partially sufficient level of knowledge about engineering and engineering. In this context, it can be said that the students' opinions about engineers are not limited. According to the research, the teaching programmes should provide more space for the STEM fields, especially the engineering field, recommendations such as the establishment of STEM corners in classes and STEM laboratories in schools.
