Abstract:

Postgraduate education is a part of higher education. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the status of individuals who registered for master of science, degree of philosophy (PhD), or specialty programs at Anatomy Department of Erciyes University (ERU) between the years of 1987 and 2012. The registry data were obtained from the archives of the Institute of Health Sciences as well as from Anatomy Department of ERU. There were 52 graduate students applied for master of science programs between 1987 and 2012. A total of 27 individuals completed their master programs. Sixteen students with master’s degree applied for PhD programs between the years of 1993 and 2012. A total of six students completed their PhD programs. 38 graduates of school of medicine were registered at Anatomy Department based on Medical Specialization Examination results between 1993 and 2012. Only three of the registrants, who started their specialty program as research assistants, completed their programs and two of them began to work as academicians in the Anatomy Department. A total of 36 postgraduate students completed their programs in the Anatomy Department until Janu-ary 2013. The numerical distributions of them were three specialty, six PhD, and 27 master students. There are still a total of 27 students undergoing postgraduate programs (eight PhD and 19 masters) in the Anatomy Department. Although there is no student for specialty program in the Anatomy Department due to lack of available tenure allocated by the Ministry of Health, the number of students applying for master and PhD programs has show an evident increase an increase, particularly during the recent years
