The puipose of this study was to analyze psychological symptoms of university students with respect to their perceptions of happiness, realization of expectations and being hopeful for the future. The study is based on 997 randomly chosen university students attending Atatürk University, Erzurum, Turkey in 2007-2008 academic year. Psychological symptoms of participant were assessed by Short Symptoms Inventory (SSI) which was originally developed by Derogatis (1992) and adapted to Turkish by Sahin and Durak (1994). Moreover, the students’ perceptions of happiness, realization of expectations and hopefulness were obtained by personal information form developed by researchers. One way variance analysis (ANOVA) and hierarchical regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results showed that psychological symptoms of those regarding themselves as happy were significantly lower than that of those participants regarding themselves as unhappy or partially unhappy. All of the psychological symptoms of those regarding themselves as having realized all their expectations were significantly lower than that of those participants who failed to realize their expectations fully or partially. Psychological symptoms of the participants who were hopeful and had favorable perceptions about future, were significantly lower than symptoms of those who are completely or partially pessimistic about future. In short, results showed that participants’ perceptions of happiness, realization of expectations and hopefulness predicted psychological symptoms.
