ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF THE WOREL “AXE”

Abstract:

One of the words the etymological origin of which cannot be explained in Turkishis ‘balta’ (ax). No explanation is included in some etymological dictionaries while,in others, it is said to be of foreign origin. This study, considering the possibilitythat it is of Turkish origin, discusses how it could be derived. The result is that theword ‘balta’ could have come from the verb ‘bal-’, which means “to stab, to stick”
