The provinces have always been an area of interest for researchers in social sciences. Sociology has instrumentalized the provinces with the aim of analyzing social and political change. Recently, literature and cinema have turned to the provinces not only for understanding social structure in general but also for understanding individual experiences. Literary works sometimes look at the provinces as a place to be enlightened; sometimes they use the provinces to represent a longing for the past. Yusuf Atılgan’s works are the liveliest examples in Turkish literature that concentrate on the individual. Recently, Turkish cinema has also focused on individual experience in the provinces, which provide the location for Bilge Ceylan’s films. This study analyzes provincial themes, relationships, and transformation of the provinces in Ahlat Ağacı (The Wild Pear Tree).
